Social Media Club in Austin 4/16/09 notes

This month's session topic: Old media rises from the grave.

Very quick introductory notes this time. Announcements:
  • Follow @IA09 for an April 27th Interactive Marketing event. Social Media Club members recieve discount, cost with discount is $130.
  • New Media Labs is having a social media workshop on May 15th, contact @conniereece for more info.
All of the panelist, except one, works in a traditional media environment (newspaper or news station). The other was a news blogger. Panelists: @robquig @elisewho @chelseabot @elis and @omarg. Newspaper affiliation was the Austin American Statesman (@statesman), KEYE and KVUE (@KVUE). Social Media Club in Austin takeaways 2/19/09

Want to tweet at work, but only to work people? Have a closed network to only your company but in Twitter style? We had a great success story about Yammer. A microblogging service very similar to Twitter but geared for being an in-house internal business communication tool. The success story came from the American Heart Association. Ricardo Guerrero also spoke about Twitter. He's credited with much of the success that Dell has had with the use of this tool. One of the biggest takeaways I got from him was the idea of ensuring your business has a human face behind its Twitter account(s). Dell does this in a really cool way on their website. On this page, Dell goes over all their different accounts (think it's twenty-something) on Twitter and helps explain them. Doing this helps people feel like thier following someone and not something. Interestingly enough, he mentioned being very concered with some of their accounts as to who they are following. Some accounts will only follow the other Dell accounts, but yet ensure that the person who responds to the Dell accounts (human) is listed on the first page as someone each of those accounts is following.
